The
Jackson-Davis Foundation was established to award
scholarships to deserving civil engineering students. The
foundation derives its name from the grandparents of the
founder; Birdel F. Jackson, Sr. and Gladys Davis Jackson, who
funded the founder's civil engineering education at the
University
of
Toledo
. His
University
of
Toledo Education
enabled him to later obtain a Master of Civil
Engineering at Georgia Tech.
Currently
there is a national shortage of good civil engineers. While
the world is focused on computers, nano technology and
the like, the need for civil engineering services is also
increasing with much less notoriety. World events
such as tsunamis, earthquakes and the flooding in
New Orleans
, and continued transportation challenges all
point to the need for major civil engineering projects
to solve the problems.
The
Jackson-Davis Foundation accepts applications from students
with a minimum 2.75 GPA . Students must be involved in
the American Society of Civil Engineers at a minimum
and other academic and professional societies to be
competitive. Community service is also a rating criteria
depending upon the number of
applications received.
